Discovery Tour: The Lake District at Work - the Real Cumbria
May 11 - 21, 2025 2 spaces (1 room, double or twin configuration)
Trip Leader - Deirdre Butler | In-country Expert & Blue Badge Guide - Jan Nicholson
The county of Cumbria in northern England, is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Hadrian's Wall and the Lake District National Park, renowned for its natural beauty. Much of this beauty was man-made such as iconic stone walls built to clear the ground and also provide shelter for sheep. The quarries on the hill side provided man with much needed materials for his work. The trees were coppiced to produce bobbins for the Cotton Mills of Lancashire.
Join us to learn and bear witness to the history of this remote and picturesque countryside made famous by the Romantic Writers Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey. Visit the location giving inspiration to Turner's famous painting crossing the Morecambe Bay. Stand beside remote Eccles Tarn where Beatrix Potter nurtured her muse for her future books enjoyed by children worldwide. Walk along Hadrian's Wall and marvel at the exquisite stonework and precise engineering accomplished over 2,000 years ago.
“We cannot stay home all our lives, we must present ourselves to the world and we must look upon it as an adventure.” Beatrix Potter
