Day 1    Wednesday December 3, 2025 Arrive in Paro

Our trip begins with a morning flight from Bangkok, Thailand to Paro, Bhutan. Flying into Paro, the view out the right hand side of the airplane, on a clear day, is of the stunning Himalayan Mountains. Upon landing, we meet our local guide and check into our hotel. Then we visit the Paro Dzong. This impressive fortress-monastery offers a glimpse into Bhutanese architecture and culture and has beautiful views over the Paro Valley. From here, we walk to the National Museum, housed in an old watchtower above the dzong. The museum provides insight into Bhutan's history, art, and traditions, which will be helpful for understanding our encounters in the days ahead. In the afternoon, relax and enjoy Paro's quiet atmosphere. Overnight - Paro. L D

Day 2    Thursday December 4 Bumthang

Today’s journey starts with a morning flight to Bumthang in the heart of Bhutan. The half-hour flight leaves mid-morning. Wonderful views of the majestic Himalayan peaks are possible if the weather is clear. Bumthang means Beautiful Field, and is a region composed of four valleys, Tang, Choekhor, Ura, and Chhume. It is considered to be the cultural heart of Bhutan. Upon arrival we join the Jambay Lhakhang Singye Cham Festival. This is a lively one-day celebration with colorful masked dances, traditional performances, and blessings by the monks. This is a small village festival, less sophisticated than the big ones held in the capital Thimphu, and much more intimate. Overnight - Bumthang for 3 nights B L D

Day 3    Friday December 5 Swan Temple Festival and Drapham Dzong

A scenic one-hour drive this morning followed by a short walk over a footbridge takes us to the 15th century Nga Lhakhang temple. This two story temple was founded by Lama Namkha Samdrup and features statues of Guru Rinpoche and protective deities. It was restored in the 1970s. While here, we'll join in the Swan Temple festival. Nearly all the locals will be in attendance, dressed in their finest, celebrating happiness, prosperity, and giving prayers of thanks for the year's harvest. After enjoying the festivities for a while, we'll take a gentle uphill walk for about 30 minutes to the ruins of a 400 year-old fort. The trail offers a calm journey through the cold air, combining outdoor activity with cultural exploration. This 17th century fortress has views of the valley and ruins we can explore. Today, Drapham Dzong serves as a window into the feudal past, inviting visitors to explore its stones. Overnight - Bumthang  B L D

“What I love is how seamless everything is. You walk through a forest and come out in a village; and there’s no difference, no division. You aren’t in nature one minute and in civilization the next. The houses are made out of mud and stone and wood, drawn from the land around. Nothing stands out, nothing jars.” ―Jamie Zeppa

Day 7    Tuesday December 9 Phobjikha

Phobjikha, a quiet glacial valley at an elevation of 9,500 feet, is a tranquil locale that serves as the winter haven for the magnificent black-necked cranes. We'll have time this morning to take a walk through its gentle landscape and look for the magnificent cranes in their natural habitat. Along the way, we can stop and chat with local potato farmers, discovering their way of life. An optional experience awaits at Aum Sonam's home: a traditional hot-stone bath (additional cost, not included). Locally sourced stones, heated in wood fires, are placed in wooden tubs to warm the water. Residents believe that this method releases beneficial minerals into the water, imparting healing properties. For those interested, there is an opportunity to assist in preparing a delightful Bhutanese dinner, creating a communal atmosphere that celebrates local cuisine. Alternatively, venture down into the crane valley for a chance to observe these elegant birds. While not all may have arrived, glimpsing even one or two can offer a moment of reflection amid the breathtaking landscape. Overnight - Phobjikha  B L D

After soaking up the ambiance here for a while, we will then go into town and stroll around the city streets until dinner time. Overnight - Thimphu B L D

Day 13    Monday December 15 Taktsang Goempa

No visit to Bhutan feels complete without the iconic Taktsang Goempa, known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery. This remarkable site clings dramatically to a cliff, sparking wonder about its origins. Legend has it that a tiger once flew here, making it the perfect location for this sacred space. We’ll start our day early to beat the crowds. It's a 1 ½ hour drive from Thimphu to the trailhead. The trail winds upward, with some steep sections and thrilling drop-offs along the way. For those who prefer, horses can carry you partway up (cost not included) although they can’t bring you back down. Even if hiking isn’t your usual activity, this climb is achievable for most. We’ll take our time to enjoy the views and the surrounding beauty.
